Halifax will writing and power of attorney services are provided by Hugh James solicitors.

Why choose us?

Life is busy, and sorting out your will or power of attorney might not be top of your list. But our services let you choose the options that are best for you – and provide instructions at your own pace. We’re here to support and guide you every step of the way.

Our will writing services

Do it yourself

This non-advisory service is a good option for straightforward wills that don’t need the help of a legal team. Create your own will using will-writing software that guides you through the process.

Once you’ve finished, you’ll get a downloadable version with clear instructions on how to print, assemble and make your will legally binding. Or you can have it professionally printed and posted to you for a small fee.

We also offer the option for you to send your executed will back to us to store securely and free of charge.

Best for: people without second marriages or children from previous relationships. Ideal for appointing a guardian for children.

Cost: from £84.00 to £120.00

Legal review

This option lets you provide your own instructions, then one of our specialist lawyers will review them and draft your will for you. They’ll highlight any issues or things that need a bit more attention and help you decide the best way to carry out your wishes.

Once you’ve reviewed and approved the draft, you’ll get a final copy with clear instructions on how to make it legally binding.

Best for: people whose requirements are more specialised and would like our legal team to write their will for them.

Cost: from £180.00 to £270.00

Legal consultation

This option gives you the chance to talk about your instructions with a will-writing lawyer, either over the phone or by video consultation.

Start by filling out our online instruction form (completing as much or as little as you like) then book an appointment to chat through and explore your options with an expert.

After your appointment, our experts will draft your will and send it to you for review. Once you’ve approved it, we’ll send you a final copy with clear instructions on how to make it legally binding.

Best for: anyone who would like the reassurance of talking to an expert, and people with more complex family, business, or personal affairs.

Cost: from £288.00 to £828.00

For tax mitigation and comprehensive lifetime planning, we recommend our bespoke service.

All fees quoted are inclusive of 20% VAT unless otherwise stated.

Bespoke service

This option includes everything from our ‘legal consultation’ service, with the addition of a full written tax report tailored to your circumstances. Experts will also provide comprehensive advice on your personal tax position and bespoke planning.

This service might also include drafting additional documents like trust deeds or letters of wishes.

Best for: people who need in-depth, bespoke tax and estate planning advice before finalising their will.

Cost: everyone’s needs are different, so our prices are on a case-by-case basis. But we’ll always try to agree a fixed fee before work starts.

Our power of attorney services

Health and Care Decisions Lasting Power of Attorney

A Health and Care Decisions LPA lets you choose someone you trust to have control over things like your living arrangements or medical treatment if you become mentally unable to make those decisions for yourself. The people you choose will also be able to refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf.

This LPA can only be used once it’s registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) and you are no longer able to make your own decisions.

Cost: from £630

Financial Decisions Lasting Power of Attorney

A Financial Decisions LPA lets you choose someone to manage your property and financial affairs if you become physically unable or lack the mental capacity to do it yourself. It can also be used while you have mental capacity too.

This LPA can only be used once it’s registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). However, it can be used even if you still have mental capacity.

Cost: from £630

All fees quoted are inclusive of 20% VAT unless otherwise stated.

Write your lasting power of attorney

Important to know before you begin:

An LPA is only valid once it’s been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). A fee is payable to the OPG. The fee is currently £92 per document. This isn’t included in our pricing.

We’ll register the documents for you as part of our service. We’ll take the OPG fee from you when you pay us, then pass it on to them. Some people may be exempt from paying the fee.

Please note that the OPG registration process time can fluctuate. Check the current registration timescale on the gov.uk website.

Offline services

You can create a will or power of attorney offline too. Fill out our enquiry form, and we’ll get in touch to help you get you started. Check out our offline pricing here.
